Many years ago when I first met Ruth I had no idea of the challenging life that she had lived and the very difficult road she would travel over the next many decades. As I read about Ruth’s agonizing personal tragedies as she dealt with mental illness, abuse and alcoholism, it tugged at my heart again and again as I thought of her difficult journey. A journey that was difficult not only for Ruth but also for Ray and their children. I am so thankful that Lois, one of my Counsellors at Christian Counselling Services, was instrumental in showing compassionate love and direction to Ruth.
After reading the painful personal stories from Ruth’s life in her book, I am reminded of John W. Peterson’s song, It’s Not An Easy Road. In his second stanza, we read these powerful words: ‘It’s not an easy road; there are trials and troubles, and many are the dangers we meet. But Jesus guards and keeps, so that nothing can harm us. And smooths the rugged path for our feet.’ Ruth, I am so proud of you for not giving up on your very difficult life. Your personal stories in your writings will be a tremendous benefit to many who also need the healing that you received from God’s Word, from the Lord Jesus Christ and from the power of the Holy Spirit.
